Chow:Hill’s regeneration of a six-storey commercial building in central Hamilton is starting from the ground up, with a contemporary new street level entrance changing the face of Westpac House.

Modern and inviting, yet timeless with a classic high-end vibe… these were the design elements upon which Chow:Hill created a contemporary new café and lobby entrance in downtown Kirikiriroa.

Located at 426 Victoria Street, Westpac House sits on a prominent central city site, but the dark, dated, and uninspiring street front is more drab than desirable.

Chow:Hill’s vision to activate the lobby has seen the addition of a café, designed with understated elegance. Removing aspects of the interior that harks back to yesteryear, the design team have ensured a modern and engaging entranceway, that serves a functional purpose of access to the remainder of the building for its key tenants.

Significant use of greenery brings a freshness to the space, while aligning it with the external green streetscape. A suspended acoustic panel allows for conversation, while break out seating spaces provide gathering areas for visitors, tenants, and tourists alike.

Design elements, including a coffee bar and seating, will activate the ground floor entrance lobby, while a new street canopy, glazing to street level, and end of trip facilities, will encourage both building inhabitants and visitors to congregate in the main foyer.

A lighter, more modern lobby space will provide a cleaner look to the commercial building at street level. This is enhanced by breaking the facia into three different layers to reduce bulk, ensuring a brighter, more contemporary façade.

The interior of the commercial building lobby reflects a neutral colour palette, allowing for the use of tone and texture to create multiple breakout areas in the extended entrance space. Freshness is brought through with the use of greenery, while the tiled floors have a soft warm terracotta vibe throughout.
