Chow:Hill’s design of Kmart’s New Zealand Distribution Centre showcases innovation, sustainability, and excellence.

At 40,000sqm in size, on an almost 9ha lot, Kmart’s Distribution Centre is a commanding presence on the landscape of New Zealand’s largest inland port, the Ruakura Superhub. One of the first commercial tenancies to be completed at the Tainui Group Holding’s site, the retail giant’s New Zealand distribution base incorporates significant environmentally sustainable design practices. With enough space for four rugby fields inside and housing two 1-million litre tanks for the sprinkler system, the Chow:Hill-designed facility includes:

  • Solar panels that generate up to 300kW of power
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Onsite stormwater treatment
  • EV charging stations
  • LED lighting and double glazing
  • HVAC systems
  • Low-emission refrigerants
  • End-of-trip facilities for kaimahi/employees
  • Automatic monitoring and reporting system for all energy and water metering.

A target of recycling over 70% of waste by weight was implemented during the construction period.

Designed to meet Green Star 5 rating, Chow:Hill's design met Ruakura Superhub Guidelines developed by Tainui to meet the Iwi’s high environmental standards. Extensive site planting with native flora enhances the site and creates visual buffers between the buildings and public access ways.

Chow:Hill’s design of Kmart’s Distribution Centre was recognised with Merit at the 2024 Property Industry Awards.
