The $14m expansion of the Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa allowed for a new two-storey building housing an accident and medical department, radiology department, and consulting rooms for visiting specialists and GPs providing after-hours services. A 20-bed inpatient ward with connections to a new integrated family health centre also extends the range of healthcare services available in the region.
The exterior design is evocative of wharenui forms while incorporating features such as natural ventilation. A themed colour palette, co-ordinated with a collection of large-scale photographic art reflecting aspects of life in the mid-north, creates a warm and welcoming environment of connection.
Stage one of the project was delivered while ensuring continuous operation of the hospital throughout all phases of construction. Stage two involves the design and construction of a primary health facility, incorporating three GP practices as well as community health, outpatient services, a pharmacy, and renal and oncology day stay facilities. Chow:Hill’s health team is also undertaking master planning for future development of the site.
