The $130million project involved the renewal and expansion of a wide range of clinical spaces across the Waikato Hospital site, to ensure the facility was future-focused for the ongoing advancement in medicine and healthcare.
The design chosen for the five-level 32,000m² building combined calming natural materials with a futuristic aesthetic. The external façade of the Meade Clinical Centre breaks the mould of traditional hospital design with its matrix of coloured panels, while the internal design incorporates floating staircases providing connection between floors, a design feature in the light and airy atrium-style entrance.
Home to a neonatal and birthing unit, emergency department, forensic mental health units, nuclear imaging, HDU, ICU, and occupational therapy departments, the project formed part of the overall Service and Campus Redevelopment for Waikato DHB, designed by the CJM joint venture of Chow:Hill, Jasmax and MSJ.
