Maximising coastal views, while utilising space and creating a setting for an enjoyable living experience, Chow:Hill’s long-term approach to the design of St Andrew’s Village has seen the retirement complex develop over more than a decade into a neighbourhood offering both care and community.
The mix of terraced houses and apartments encompasses a range of housing configurations arranged around outdoor courtyards and a winding hillside avenue. Pedestrian paths connect a sequence of communal facilities, with gardens, terraces, lounges and dining spaces, as well as active recreation areas.
The large, new community facility, which includes a restaurant and cinema, is spacious in its design aesthetic, with natural light maximised to give the interior a welcoming contemporary feel. Effective use of partitions, both fixed and temporary, give the building flexibility to accommodate the varied usage requirements of residents.
The collaboration between St Andrew’s Village in Glendowie, Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau and Chow:Hill’s health design team spans more than a decade. During this period, Chow:Hill has advised on the master planning of the complex and worked in partnership with the village to design a variety of housing and facilities, including villas, apartment suites, and cottages.
The relationship has resulted in the establishment of an authentic community place, responsive to the changing needs of current residents while anticipating those of the future.
