Stretching one kilometre from Gisborne’s Waikanae Beach to Midway Beach is a scenic cycle and walkway of cultural significance, telling stories of navigation and the region’s settlement history.
Designed by Chow:Hill’s landscape architecture team in consultation with cultural advisor, Sir Derek Lardelli, the Oneroa cycle and walkway highlights local cultural narratives through clever detailing of concrete and timber treatments.
Oneroa loosely translates to ‘long walk by the beach’ and Chow:Hill’s design interventions have improved both beach and coastline accessibility. Artwork and carvings embellish the street furniture made of recycled local hardwood, in places of respite for pathway users.
The Oneroa Cycle and Walkway was a collaborative project with Frame Group, 4 Sight Consulting, Stormwater Solutions, Derek Lardelli and the Gisborne District Council.
