Chow:Hill’s eye-catching design of Ebbett Group’s Audi and Volkswagen dealerships achieved an award-winning reimagined look of the classic car yard. In direct contrast to traditional car sales floors, this landmark in Hamilton East places the focus on the public realm.
The architectural challenge for this dealership was to encapsulate the distinctiveness of Audi and Volkswagen’s corporate identities in a cohesive architectural relationship on a 5,750m² corner site. A shared workshop and parts facility were also an integral part of the design brief.
Chow:Hill's design maximises the impact of an elevated ceiling with the installation of a six-metre high glass window that showcases the vehicles while supplying an abundance of natural light. External features include a 3m-radius glass curved wall; anodised, folded, and punched aluminium sheets; and waterproof zinc cladding; while the interior design includes a parabolic curved wall portraying a racetrack surface, with rebated lighting of a centre line.
Located on a historical Hamilton site, both design and construction of the dealership was managed sympathetically with the surrounding neighbourhood consisting of light commercial, community and residential housing.
To achieve activation and interest on the corner site, the European-inspired Café Osten, positioned in the heart of the building yet open to foot traffic, supports both connectivity and hospitality. The outcome is an inviting and functional showroom environment, focusing primarily on vehicle display and customer experience.
