Jane Hill
In 2011 Chow:Hill Architects was commissioned to undertake the master planning of Wintec’s new Rotokauri campus. The primary objectives were to create a strong campus identity, clear connectivity and a sense of place.
The flagship development of the campus, located at the north end of Hamilton’s Mangaharakeke Drive (formerly Avalon Drive), is the Engineering and Trades Facility, a 5000m² multidisciplinary space for staff and students engaged in the teaching and learning of vocational trades.
The design brief for the two-storey building was to create a vibrant, flexible and contemporary real-world learning environment, enabling staff to implement a new learning model developed by Wintec in conjunction with industry.
The innovative approach sees trade qualifications taught in a more collaborative and integrated way, one that encourages students to adopt a more hands-on approach to their learning. This pedagogy underpins Chow:Hill’s design and fit-out of the new facility.
In response to Wintec’s integrated delivery model, Chow:Hill created a vibrant, flexible and contemporary real-world learning environment which includes a mix of formal studios, social breakout areas and practical learning workshops, a layout that enables students to mix theoretical learning with hands-on application.
Equipped for approximately 1,000 students studying vocational and professional fields including construction, plumbing, electrical and automotive engineering, along with civil, mechanical and electronic engineering, and architectural technology, Wintec’s Engineering and Trades Facility has received multiple awards for its educational design philosophy.
The external design of the sector-leading facility utilises Trespa cladding, chosen for its stability, durability and visual impact. This works in combination with the exposed trusses, a key feature of the landmark building. The robust material is also used internally, alongside the exposed services and structural systems of the building which have become an integral part of the overall student learning experience.
