Chow:Hill’s design of Te Puna o Waikato, Trust Waikato’s headquarters reflects an integration of contemporary, cultural and historical influences.
The project’s site context adjacent to the historic Kirikiriroa Pā and Waikato River strongly influenced the design concept. The final architectural expression speaking to the cultural narratives of Ngaati Wairere to link past, present, and future as guided and informed by close engagement with Trust Waikato’s Kaumaatua Tame Pokaia.
External design features reinforce the collaborative community spirit of Trust Waikato these include the large panoramic curtain wall providing strong visual connectivity and glulam timber entry colonnade welcoming visitors to the building, inspired by niho taniwha design narratives.
A focus on welcome and connectivity flows into the landscape design. Trust Waikato Te Puna o Waikato’s goal was to open the site to the public and visitors, shaping the surrounding environment and encouraging shared use of this community environment.
